You can get to the Cabin coming through Marietta. Coming into Marietta, a 2-wheel vehicle if fine but once in the canyons heading up, a high clearance 4x4 or off-road ATV/UTV is needed. This makes a great day-trip with some wonderful scenic views and, the ending destination is a definate treat!
Marietta was a source of salt and borax starting about 1867. Marietta became a town in 1877 and within one year contained 150 people, 13 saloons, a post office, several stores, and many stone and adobe huts. The daily horse stage was robbed 30 times in 1880 and in one week of that year it was robbed 4 times! The borax plants maintained productions until the 1890's and were then abandoned for the more prosperous sites in Death Valley.
Marietta is also the nation's first formally recognized Wild Burro Range. The 68,000-acre site is home to about 85 burros. During the late 1800's, miners used burros as pack animals while prospecting for gold and silver in the Marietta Mining District. Some of these animals escaped or were released into the desert area surrounding Teels Marsh. The descendants of those burros now roam freely near the ruins of the historic Nevada mining town of Marietta, and through the marshlands. The Marietta herd is unique in Nevada, since this is one of the most northern burro populations of any size. Also, the animals themselves are larger than those encountered in areas to the south.
I'm told that Cabin Under the Rock (may also be known as Bass Cabin) was a turn of the century moonshiner's cabin. Because mining flourished here, it may just as easily be a miner's cabin. Either way, it is a very unique structure - well worth the trip. You will also have an awesome view of the valley floor and Teels Marsh.
Cache is a standard ammo can containing log with pen/pencil. FTF gets to keep the "gold" Presidential Dollar. Also contained is Cody the Cacher (he may be a dog or a sheep - you decide - but please get him started on his journey), as well as auto fresheners, camping rain cover, laser light key chain, a snow man and a few other bits of swag.
