The friendly and idyllic rural town of Kilcoy is just 94km from Brisbane and 76km from the Sunshine Coast and boasts a combination of rolling farmland, recreational lakes, rugged mountains and beautiful forests.

Everything was going along quite normally in the area until in 1979 when two 16-year-old Brisbane boys claimed to have seen the mythical creatures known as a "yowie" at Sandy Creek, four kilometres north of Kilcoy. They stumbled across a mass of hair, bone, fangs and a memorable stench and the yowie legend was born.

The yowie is Australia’s version of the Himalayan Yeti and the North American Big Foot. It is said to be a half-ape/half-man and covered in dark fur, long arms and scavenges in the forest, breaking trees and leaving huge footprints.

Since 1979 there have been hundreds of sightings of the beast and folklore is so strong Kilcoy has dedicated a park to the creature and commissioned a three metre tall wooden statue in its honour.

You never know you might see the famous Kilcoy Yowie while you are searching for the cache.
