Polaris Facts Submitted by Other Cachers:
That's a Given: Polaris, son pointed out, is also a snowmobile company. But to me is is the North Star. Polaris marks the end of the handle of the Little Dipper and when you face Polaris you are always facing north.
JEM3: In Scandinavian mythology the Norse gods made the Universe out of the bits and pieces of the hacked-up bodies of their defeated enemies. To finish the job they hammered an enormous spike, called Veralder Nagli, or "World Spike," into the center of the Universe and made the sky revolve about it. The end of the spike had a jeweled nail-head, which remained forever fixed on the great sky dome as Polaris.
mscrep: Polaris is an F7 II class star (i.e., A yellowish/white post main sequence Giant star). Polaris is known to be part of a trinary stellar system with the two companions being an F5 main sequence star and a Ab dwarf.
Also, the initial generation of US Navy Submarine Launched Ballistic Missles (SLBMs) were named Polaris.
Bigrock95: Polaris, Montana is a small ghost town which can be found along the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway. Polaris, the North Star, was what inspired its name given by the silver miners working there The historic town is located in Beaverhead County northwest of Yellowstone National Park and just south of the Beaverhead National Forest at an elevation of 6,352 feet.
Nhtravelers5: Of historical note, polaris has not always been the north star, and it won't be in the future. That's because of precession, the wobbling of the Earth as it rotates around its axis means that every few thousand years or so the north pole will point towards another spot in space.
trainlove: Some people think Polaris is the brightest or closest star to us, it's not, but it has been one of the most important stars during early explorations. It's also slightly variable.
Penguin Expeditions: Polaris: Please see the links posted on 03/24/2013 of The North Star and the Polaris Dust Nebula
Interesting sidenote: when we visited the mother cache for all these little baby viruses, we were hoping for an "s" for star or a "b" for bright. Neither was available so that's how we ended up with "p" for Polaris.
This cache was placed to meet the requirements for the VOCABULARY VIRUS cache (GC17180).
