Geocache Description:

Two of the characteristic features of the valley are the silt bluffs and terraces that parallel present day Okanagan Lake. During the last glacial period the Fraser glacier formed an ice dam south of present day Penticton. This led to the formation of a lake much deeper (up to 100 meters) than the present day lake. The sediments that accumulated in the lake basin and along its shores are what we now see as the silt bluffs and terraces of the area which provide ideal orchard and grape growing locations.

Eventually, as the climate warmed, the ice dam was breached and Lake Penticton drained. A depression or "kettle" was left in the glacial sediment which remained filled with water to produce Okanagan Lake.

The posted coordinates will take you to a safe public parking spot that will allow you to observe these Naramata silt bluffs. Please do not attempt to climb the bluffs.
