If you are just going to take this cache and run then the walk is suitable for young children as it just a short stroll out from Austwick. I recommend you do the beautiful countryside justice, continue your walk and explore this area - Thieves Moss is of particular interest - a large limestone pavement under the shadow of Ingleborough with great views of peny-ghent and Crummack Dale
The south-Western sector of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is noted for its interesting limestone scenery . This cache is located in an area- the 'Norber Erratics' which is of great geological interest. The walk is actually just a short distance out of the village of Austwick (on the A65 trunk road) Start at grid 769 686 outside the school and head northwest along the road to Horton and take the first lane to your left (Thwaite Lane Grid ref 769 692). After a short way take the signed footpath on your right across the fields to the Norber Erratics. The Norber boulders are freaks of nature, by rights they should be lying on the floor of the valley, but the rivers of ice that scoured the area during the glaciation of the Iron Age picked them up and dropped them down again on top of the very limestone that they should have lain beneath. Over many thousands of years the limestone has worn away around them leaving many of the boulders of Silurian stone suspended on the limestone pedestals, Silurian gritstone being much harder and more resistent to weathering than the limestone.
The large limestone scar in front is Robin Proctor's scar. The scar is said to have got it's name from a young farmer, thwarted in love in years gone by, who rode his horse over the scar top in a last desperate act, and much good it did him - although he did get his name on the Ordanance Survey Map, which is more than can be said for most of us.
