The above posted coordinates should lead you near an Ohio
Historical Society marker as well as the Sardis Town Pump. Monroe
County, Ohio has relied upon valuable groundwater located on the
eastern side of the county for many years. The source of the famous
town well at Sardis is an aquifer. An aquifer is an underground
layer of permeable rock or sediment that can contain substantial
amounts of water. Aquifers serve as the source of water for both
springs and wells. The aquifer that supplies the well at Sardis is
an underground sand and gravel layer deposited in flood planes
along the Ohio River.
The Sardis Town Pump has been in continuous operation since the
nineteenth century and has played an important role in the daily
life of Sardis residents. The well was originally operated with a
hand pump but was later converted to electricity. It is the
drinking choice for many in the community and throughout Monroe
County. It is the last of four known public wells that have served
the village of Sardis.
