Geocache Description:

Hidden among weirdly shaped rocks near Tala, about 30 kms W of Guadalajara, Mexico

MAGIC ROCKS OF TALA

Los Chorros de Tala is a popular bathing and picnic spot, but few people notice the fascinating area just north of the dirt road leading to the waterfall. Here you will find volcanic rocks shaped like armchairs, bath tubs, walls and chopped-off tree trunks. You can park at N20° 41.448’ W103° 41.285’. Then cross the road and head NW across a pasture and up into this curious place where you’d expect to bump into an elf or leprechaun at any moment. The place is hilly but not steep. There are few paths, but the brush (maleza) is not bad and it’s easy to get around.

After you find the cache, you can head NE if you feel like continuing to hike among these magic rocks. After about a kilometer before you run into houses and “civilization.”

If you’re interested in visiting Los Chorros, this site is described in the book Outdoors in Western Mexico (in English)…o puedes consultar la versión en Español: Al Aire Libre en las Cercanías de Guadalajara. Although the Chorros are very comercialized, the area above the falls is good for hiking. By the way, the river that produces the falls is called El Río Salado and is the cooled-down continuation of the famous Río Caliente. You can find updates about these hiking spots plus everything you ever wanted to know about caves in western Mexico at our website, www.ranchopint.com .

How to Get to the Magic Rocks:
Take highway 15 (the libre, not the cuota) 25 kms W from the Guadalajara Periférico to highway 70 which heads SW towards Ameca. Go about 11 kms and look for the sign for Los Chorros (at N20 41.260 W103 41.579). Turn left onto the dirt road (usually in very good condition) leading to Los Chorros. Total driving time from el Periférico: less than half an hour.
