The Buck Stops Here Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: From the Northern Region Office, New Jersey State Parks Department:

Over a year ago New Jersey enacted a policy that all geocachers must obtain a permit to have their cache on State Park property. We have informed all geocaching host that this is their responsibility and have given them ample time to go about getting their permits. At this time, over a year later, there are still several caches that haven’t complied.

We ask that as the land managers for the attached properties we would like to have these illegal caches removed.

Based on the list provided by the state, I am forced to archive this listing. If you have a permit, get a permit or don't believe your cache is on state park/forest land, please contact me via email. Make sure you include the GC code.

If you don't plan to get a permit, please remove your geocache so it doesn't become geo-trash.

Geocache Description:

Located within the Wanaque Wildlife Management Zone with two access points with plenty of parking.

The Cache is a medium-sized round plastic container with home-made camo paint job.

You can access the cache from two locations; one off of East Shore Drive at N41 09.735, W074 19.255, the other at Green Turtle Pond boat launch accessed via Awosting Road. There are unmarked trails (recently they are an orange blaze paint quad trails) that take a loop around the area.

If you want a short hike, use East Shore access point, if you want a long hike pack a snack and park at Green Turtle Pond.

Either way you decide to hike, there is no need to bushwack until you are about 50 yards from the cache. Even then, there is minimal brush and the path in will be somewhat easy to locate.

There is really nothing special about the area today, I just just thought it was a nice hike and the terrain is very appealing. Back in earlier half of the 20th century, this area was being groomed for an extention of the Awosting Community. Before that, the East Shore Road was a rail bed that took passengers via train up to the present day Awosting Dam to access various hotels and recreation areas. This area was part of the Ringwood Company and the land was likely used to provide raw materials for the furnace operations at Long Pond Iron Works.

This is a WMA, so hunting is allowed and the area is an active hunting location. Check seasons before you enter. In general, Sundays are non-hunting days, but use caution.

Please practice Cache-in Trash-out. Aside from the very old major appliances found along the way, there is little trash.
