Geocache Description:

The unmarked trail system that leads to this cache is frequented by dog walkers in the area. If you ever participated in a 6th grade hike to Mt Baldy with Bear Valley students, you will quickly recognize the way. the cache should be accessible in all seasons.

*** I meant to place a GeoNorth pen in with the log, but forgot. I'd appreciate it if the FTF could place a pen or pencil in with the logbook.

Many of Alaska's public schools have adopted a fun and educational program to teach economics to 5th graders. This program is called "Mini Society". Mini Society is a student directed program in which each participating class creates an economy, they name it, produce currency, set up a government, create and apply for jobs, set wages and markets goods for sale. The teacher acts as a facilitator of the program while the children of the class make real life decisions within the economy. Once all the major decisions about the economy are in place, the kids participate in a hands on creative lesson in business strategy. Over several weeks, the children are asked to come up with an idea or item that they wish to sell. There is a $10 limit on supplies and they are encouraged to use recycled goods. These handmade creations are then sold in a classroom market. The kids learn to set the selling price, marketing strategy, they have to purchase business licenses (and food licenses if they wish), pricing, etc. as they learn hands on about fundamental economic principals including supply and demand, inflation and business strategy.

This cache is started in honor of this wonderful program which was the brainchild of economist and educator, Dr. Marilyn Kourilsky of UCLA. All the initial items placed in this cache are products which were made and sold by 5th graders at Bear Valley Elementary school. They were paid for with Nacho Cheese bucks, Bananaville bucks and Gems (the chosen currencies of the individual classes). I hope you enjoy these creative items and I encourage you to leave behind some hand made trade items of your own.

Congratulations to Ladybug Kids on the FTF!!! This is the only FTF I ever heard of that was found before the cache was even posted! WELL DONE!
