Geocache Description:

Rufus Castle stands on a rocky promintory overlooking Church Ope Cove, Portland, Dorset.

The castle is in ruins and much of it is now scattered on the shore below. The only remaining part still intact is the Tudor (15th century) built archway spanning the path.

The castle was probably built for William II (called "Rufus" because of his red hair).

This Norman fortress is also known as "Bow and Arrows" castle. So nicknamed because it was built in the shape of a pentagon. Its 7 foot thick walls had numerous "loop-holes" through which arrows could be fired down on attackers. Rocks were also thrown down from its upper galleries.

The cache is a clip-lock plastic container full of the usual goodies.
Please use stealth when retrieving and replacing the container.

There is no parking or turning on the road down towards the cache. Please park in the free car park at the indicated coordinates.

There is a First-to-Finders prize of a Green Dragon.
