Geocache Description:

Rock Canyon Recreational Area

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Rock Canyon is located in the Wasatch Mountains in north-central Utah. The city of Provo lies just to the west of the canyon. The canyon is very popular due to its unique geology, excellent rock climbing, and scenic hikes.

Rock Canyon, Utah is like an open book that exposes over 500 million years of the Earth's history. Frozen within the canyon walls are evidences of a variety of environments that once existed in Utah. Among these are two distinct glacial periods that sculpted the landscape 500 million years apart.

The Wasatch fault is an extensional fault that is still seismically active and dozens of small earthquakes occur along it each year. Looking north from the mouth of Rock Canyon the abrupt mountain front illustrates the active extensional fault system.

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail can also be accessed from the Canyon.

To log this Cache you must answer at least 2 of the following questions and post a picture of your party at the posted coordinates with the canyon behind you. E-Mail me your answers, Please do not post them

1. The history of Rock Canyon can be divided into how many main phases?

2. Locate one area which you think is direct evidence of the Wasatch fault and describe your observation and send (do not post) a picture of that area and tell me why you think it is evidence of the fault.

3. Describe some of the canyons rocks that can be seen from the coordinates - are they rough or smooth, what is their color, are they porous?

4. Name 2 different kinds of rock that can be found in the Canyon.

OPTIONAL: Post a picture of your party at the Posted Coordinates.

If you get a chance, spend a little time hiking around the canyon. It is a very nice area. I used to Rock Climb here when I was a teenager.
