Easy, hike to a small, very old family cemetery plot, off an
unmaintained dirt, town road.
This is a traditional cache in an ammo. box. It contains a tiger
logbook with pencil to record you visits. Trading items include a
silver picture frame, GMC key chain, a hair ornament, Beanz,
racecar stickers, and a note pad. I have also added my latest TB.
Locally and on a few old maps, this small but lovely cemetery is
called Betsey’s cemetery but in historic records, the plot
is referred to as Babcock Cemetery. The cemetery is on
Blandford Road, east of Schoolhouse Road. It was established in
1807 and contains five known graves. . The oldest marker is for
Walter Babcock and his wife Betsey. Information on Tolland
cemeteries was collected by Susan Moore. I was unable to obtain any
information on the Babcock family but will continue my research and
update this listing if appropriate.
The cache can be located by adding the month and day of Betsey’s
death plus 5 to the last 2 coordinates of the N and adding the
month and day of her husband Walter’s death plus 108 to the last 3
coordinates of the W. This will give you new coordinates for the
cache. There is limited parking in a pull off on Schoolhouse Road.
In winter, be sure to completely pull off Schoolhouse Road. You can
park on Blandford Road as long as you do not block it since it is
traveled by many types of four-wheel vehicles and snowmobiles.
If you choose to take a vehicle down this road, be warned that
it is easy to get stuck and almost impossible to find anyone to
assist you. It is an easy ½ mile hike to the cache and in most
seasons that is the safest means of access.
