Half Way Up Mt. McDonald: A Glacier/Baker View

A short jaunt about half way up Mt. McDonald

This cache is placed in the fine tradition of the MidMountain Mountaineers. It is approximately half way up the summit of Mt. McDonald in elevation. This cache brings the presence of the MMM to another one of the NW’s fine summits, particularly good for a winter adventure when the higher elevations are less accessible.

The hike up is about 1200 feet of elevation gain if you park at the Mt. McDonald unofficial trailhead parking at coordinates N47°21.413’ and W121°53.016’. Hike the main trail/logging road up to the gated intersection at N47°20.655 and W121°52.247’ and head east past the gate to a nice viewpoint of Glacier Peak and Mt. Baker framed between Rattlesnake Mt. and Mt. Washington. The cache is a quart-sized lock-n-lock hidden in a pretty accessible location near the logging road. The trail/roads are in pretty good shape, but not necessarily stroller shape unless you have big diameter wheels and a full head of steam. Be careful of the gate crossings, there are 2 along the way both are wide and far reaching meaning the easiest way around them is either over or under. The views of the area are very nice up here, so bring a camera if you get lucky for a clear day.
