Geocache Description:

Feature is visible from the coordinates which are on the sign at the top of the cliff on a public walkway. Tarseal and fully wheelchair accessable from three different locations.

This site gives a viewpoint of Caroline Bay and the nearby sign provides an historic photograph which clearly demonstrates the impact of the breakwater constructed in 1870. The coastal current flows from South to North along the East Coast of New Zealand drawing up rocks, shingle and sand. The breakwater captures the larger material (the rocks and the shingle) and deposits it at South Beach (Patiti Point cache GC16TQN takes you there). The lighter material continues around the breakwater, settles in an area of no current depositing itself here, forming a sandy bay. 34 hectares of new land has formed as a direct result of the breakwater. In order to log this cache you must indicate how many cubic metres of sand is deposited annually in Caroline Bay, AND state a navigation tool within 20m of the information sign. The east coast, including this Bay, is subject to tsunami.
