Geocache Description:

Fannie Bay Gaol.
The name may be funny but it's history is anything but. This was Darwin's main prison from 1883 to 1979. It is now a museum where you can view the cells and eerie gallows where the last hanging took place in 1952. There is also a display on the Cyclone Tracy devastation.
The cache is located near this historic Goal.
There is no need to go inside to get the cache.

The cache is a small container that has been well camouflaged to blend into its environment. There is a log and pencil to record your visit. Extra Stealth is required or you may end up inside. So be careful and have fun.

Fannie Bay Gaol is one of the Darwin museums that was an original part of real life in the Top End until it's use was discontinued in 1979. Built in 1883 it conveys the atmosphere of early settlement to the visitor, with it's gallows and small cells.
In about 1918, part of the original Gaol land was resumed to build the town’s airstrip which is today Ross Smith Avenue.
