Geocache Description:

Much of the economy of Wyoming is based on the extractive industries having to do with the country’s energy needs. Examples of such industries are oil, gas, and coal.

About 25 miles to the east of this site, coal is extracted from the ground by the Bridger Coal Company. This coal is transported by conveyer to the Jim Bridger Power Plant, where four 2,110-megawatt coal-fired generation units provide electricity for six western states. Electricity is sent out by way of the electric transmission lines which you see here, and becomes part of the country’s electrical grid.

The Bridger Coal Mine is the largest surface coal mine in Sweetwater County. Since the mine opened, it has delivered more than 170 million tons of low-sulfur coal to the plant, and has served as the plant’s primary source of fuel since the plant opened in 1974. The close proximity of the mine to the plant helps to reduce the transportation costs of the coal. The mine currently has reserves of approximately 120 million tons, and there are plans to operate a new underground mine that will extract coal from deeper seams.

Using the information given at the site, how many tons of coal are received from the Bridger Coal Company each year?
