This cache has been archived.

vp4: This series is causing me more grief than many of my other caches, I no longer have time to maintain suburban micros. Thanks for all the logs

Geocache Description:

The MESCo series of caches is based on the Geelong Tramways that operated from 1912 until 1956. A photo of a Geelong tram is present in all caches (either in the cache or log-book). The number of each of the trams should be noted as they will assist with finding the co-ordinates of a final mystery cache. Good luck.

MESCo was the Melbourne Electricity Supply Company that was the supplier of domestic electricity in Geelong and was also responsible for the construction and operation of an electric tramway system in the Geelong CBD and surrounding suburbs. At its peak it utilised 31 trams and had eight routes. The total route mileage in its heyday was around 12 miles. There are a few remnants of the system visible in places but they are not easily found.

This series of caches will take you to the termini of all the lines. Caches vary from magnetic micros to traditional hides. Difficulty also varies mainly due to the suburban locations and the presence of muggles.
Cache details: MESCo # 6

This was the ultimate terminus of the EAST route. The line was opened as far Garden and Ryrie Sts on 12/10/1922 extended to Humble St / Ormond Rd on 25/01/1923 and finally to Boundary and Ormond Rds on 01/03/1923. Prior to the tram line opening, MESCo operated a bus service that utilised three Milnes-Daimler buses with solid rubber tyres on this route. After 10 years service patrons were glad to see their retirement. The line was one of the first to close on 08/01/1956. The route serviced the Garden St shopping strip and nearby residential areas and would have taken quite a few mourners to visit the cemetery. Trams ran from here to the CITY and then onto CHILWELL prior to 1952 but after 1952 proceeded to the CITY then to WEST.

The picture shows tram * near the EAST terminus.

The cache is a 200ml clip-lock container.
