The cache is on the road reserve as are several building ruins. The well and associated structures and the school/church ruins (near a planted gum tree to the west) are on private land.
Eastern Well is now only an historic site whereas once it was an important stop over and trading centre for the local pioneer farming community. The well and livestock watering facilities were established in the latter part of the 1880’s when the surrounding area was used by pastoralists. By 1911 an unproclaimed township had developed, with two boarding houses, a wood and iron Methodist Church, a combined store and post office, a blacksmith shop and corrugated iron stables where chaff could be bought. A mail service came once a week and there was a sportsground, football oval and race track. Eastern Well thrived and plans were drawn up for an official township. However in 1914 the Karoonda to Waikerie railway opened and this bypassed Eastern Well. The town traders moved to Mercunda and other townships served by the railway. The area now shows little evidence of occupation other than the ruins of stone buildings. It has been proclaimed an historic site.
