A moderate walk to Easedale Tarn via Sour Milk Gill that can be done as a circular from Grasmere.
The walk up to Easedale Tarn from Grasmere is a very straightforward and easy one and has long been one of our favourites, first spotted from Tarn Crag having traversed the tops from Helm Crag and creating our own ‘Horse Shoe’. We set out in reasonable weather but were later caught in a blinding blizzard near Tarn Crag, hailstones stinging our faces and illustrating how quickly the weather can change on the fells.
Less fortunately in 1808 George and Sarah Green who were living at Blind Tarn Cottage, Easedale left their six children at home to journey across the fells for provisions. They perished in a blizzard near Lang How Tarn never to return to their children who spent the next few days alone in the cottage. Subsequently William Wordsworth who had recently taken up residence in Allen Bank offered Agnes, the eldest child of the Greens, a position in service and thus a home.
To reach the tarn cross Goody Bridge and take the track on the left at the sign to "Easedale Tarn" and immediately cross Easedale Beck. The route ahead is obvious and the magnificent views of the higher surrounding fells soon opens up. After a fairly level stroll across the pastures, the route soon starts to climb following a well made path up the left side of Sour Milk Gill. Don't be fooled into thinking that the top of the waterfall is the summit; the route merely levels off before a final climb to Easedale Tarn.
From the Tarn you have the choice of retracing your steps (not very exciting), or alternatively cross over the outflow from the tarn and go back down the opposite bank before veering off and coming back down through Far Easedale, a very pleasant stroll down the valley. Should you be uncertain along this route someone has taken the time to paint ‘Grasmere’ and a directional arrow into a huge boulder.
