After a
request from Haggis Hunter, here is the cache for the two
unicorns on the west end of the Meadows. Similar to their sisters
on the east side the sculptures are placed on top of tall columns,
but the origin is completely different:
On 6th May 1886 the International Exhibition of Industry,
Science and Art was held in the Meadows. It was a showcase of the
material progress of the age: "The grounds were laid out with
walks, rockery, fountain and bandstand. The principal open-air
attractions were the electric railway which ran between the main
Brougham Place entrance and Middle Meadow Walk; the working man's
model dwelling-house, which included the most modern appliances for
sanitation and convenience; and the refreshment rooms, both
temperance and otherwise. The Exhibition buildings and grounds were
lit by 3,200 electric lamps in the largest illumination scheme ever
attempted in Scotland."

As permanent buildings are not permitted on the grounds of the
Meadows by act of Parliament, most of the structures were
demolished after the exhibition. The "Master Maisons Memorial
Pillars" are two of the few remaining items. (Another one is the
"Prince Albert Victor Sundial" at N55° 56.517 W3° 11.928)
Since the original cache has been compromised, it was replaced
by a nano cache. Good luck.
