The Capitaine Bourgainville was a 345 ft long ship, built in 1935, weighing 3614 tons. In 1975 she was used for N.Z. - Pacific trade carrying wheat, frozen meat, fish & butter as cargo. On 3rd September 1975 of the coast of Whananaki, with 29 crew & 8 passengers she caught fire at 2 am. Due to the atrocious weather conditions & strong currents 16 people lost their lives when the life boats were swamped.
The monument at S 35 32.026 E 174 27.870 was errected a year later to remember the lives that were lost.
There is a D.O.C. track to the cache site - just follow the orange markers or if it is low tide a faster direct route can be taken (less than 1 hour)
