Kenton Track Traverse (Canterbury) Traditional Cache
Kenton Track Traverse (Canterbury)

Find the Kenton Track cache because of the outstanding views into the Heathcote Valley. You need to walk this traverse to appreciate it.
This is a “follow-the-track-to-the-cache” affair because there’s private property on the uphill side and dangerous bluffs on the downhill side. The track peters out across broken ground and sometimes braids. Follow the orange track markers and stay close to the brow of the hill.
The terrain difficulty is listed as a 4 because of the risk of falling. I declined to take my preschool children up here. Sturdy footwear advised. This is not happy place when a southerly is blowing.
When your GPSr indicates that you are getting close, pick your way down the hill to a small and pleasing plateau. Then follow your GPSr across and up the hill to the cache site. You’ll have a clear view of three weathered macrocarpas (maybe they are pines) from the plateau and the listed co-ordinates. Repeat: do not follow your GPSr over the rock; hunt from the downhill side.
There are several access points for Kenton Track: off Rockview Place; from the stile near Stoneyridge Close in The Ridge subdivision; from Summit Road near Broadleaf Lane.
Kenton was the middle name of John Britten, the Christchurch-based motorcycle innovator; the track is part of the John Britten reserve. The cache is a one-litre clear plastic box containing the usual items.
Enjoy the view.
