Geocache Description:

The geomeet at the posted coordinates is a regular geocaching event, however, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT), a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at www.geocaching.com .

This geomeet will begin at 10:30 am. at the Warren County Winterfest event tent at THE BOAT LAUNCH in Chapman State Park and will last officially until 3:00 pm. Stop by, sign the log, and say hello to geo-friends. There will be seven temporary caches hidden in the Park that will be available just for this weekend and a Travel Bug exchange. The geomeet is being held at Chapman State Park in conjunction with the Warren County Winterfest, a three-day festival of events. Follow the link for a full schedule of events that you can take in while meeting some friends and grabbing a few caches. There will be plenty of time for people to find the event caches around all the events going on at the Park. Food and refreshments will be available.

Also, some of the Kinzua Cachers have agreed to host a newcomer seminar on geocaching at 2:00 pm, no experience or GPS is needed for anyone who wants to learn more about the sport of geocaching. So come out and join the fun. Post a note to let us know if you plan on coming, or drop a Travel Bug into the event for trade. GPS units will be available for loan from Chapman State Park for anyone who wants to try geocaching, but doesn't own a gps unit yet.

Please note that this AGT passport stamp will only be available for the event on January 26th, 2008. Don't forget to bring your AGT passport book.

SPECIAL NOTE UPDATE Mike Henderson of the Oil Region Alliance will be in attendance with coins for all ten counties and will be able to validate AGT passports and award coins to those who have qualified. We will also have passports available for those who are just getting started with the Allegheny GeoTrail.

The best way to get to Chapman State Park is to travel to Clarendon on U.S. Route 6 and turn onto the Chapman Park Road. It is about 4.5 miles from Clarendon.

Update 1-24-08 Here is a rundown on the event and the Geo-Scrabble Game Rules.

1. There are 7 temporary caches that are available to be found as part of the Geo-Scrabble Game. Each cache contains a logbook and 100 sealed envelopes, each containing a single letter from the alphabet.

2. Find as many of the 7 temporary caches as you wish or have time to find before the deadline. Sign the log and collect one sealed envelope per geocaching identity from each cache. DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPES!!! THE OFFICIAL SCORER WILL OPEN THEM WHEN YOU TURN THEM IN AT THE EVENT TENT!!

3. The Official scorer will open your envelopes at the registration table and award scrabble points for each letter that you have collected up to a maximum of seven envelopes. The scorer will issue you a game card with your seven letters noted and then you must try to make the longest word possible using only your seven letters. You receive points for all of the letters you collected, but you will also receive bonus points for the number of letters that you are able to use correctly in a word.

4. The word submitted must be found in the official dictionary of the event-Webster’s New World Dictionary-Third College Edition. Words may not be proper nouns, abbreviations, contractions, slang, jargon, or foreign words. The decision of the judges will be based solely on the official dictionary and the judge’s decision is final.

5. Envelopes can be turned in to the judge at anytime during the event to receive your game card and you may have as much time as you need to deliberate on making a word from your letters, except that all game cards must be turned in by 3:00 p.m. for official scoring. Prizes for the highest and lowest score will be awarded beginning at 3:30 p.m. Participants need not be present to win, but you will miss half the fun if you aren’t there to witness the presentation.

There is one additional temporary event cache called The Polar Bear Plunge Virtual Cache that can be logged only by participating in the official Winterfest Polar Bear Plunge. Coordinates for this cache are N 41*44.912 W79*10.783 or something like that (wherever they cut the whole in the ice). See kcepenn to sign the log if you participated in the Polar Bear Plunge. Bluejaytoo and BigWags have signed up to do the polar plunge and will have their sponsor sheets available if any other geocachers would like to sign on as a sponsor. Remember, it is for a good cause as the sponsorship fees go to the Salvation Army and participants will also be able to claim the temporary virtual cache that the rest of us chickens won't be able to claim. Anyone wishing to join the Polar Plunge can get their sponsorship form and release form from the winterfest website linked above in this cache description.

The basic schedule will be; The geomeet will officially begin at 10:30 with a travel bug exchange, AGT Passport pickup and validations, and the event log signing. At 11:00 AM, the coordinates for the temporary caches will be provided and participants are free to roam the winterfest finding caches and enjoying the other events going on such as the Polar Bear Plunge at 1:00 PM. Envelopes may be turned in at the registration table anytime during the day, but must be turned in by 3:00 pm at the latest for scoring. Prizes will be awarded beginning at 3:30 PM. Contestants need not be present to win, but why not make a day of it and stay until dark to enjoy the Winterfest fireworks. Food will be available at the event tent during the day for a charge or bring your own lunch. There is no charge for the event, however, a donation can will be available if anyone wishes to donate to support the event and help defray the expense of the prizes awarded.

We will also offer a geocaching seminar at 2 PM for those new to the sport and we will have GPS units available during the day for sign out if you are a newcomer and don't have your own unit yet. There is no charge to sign out a unit, but they can only be signed out by someone with a valid drivers license.
