Geocache Description:

When living on an island, visitors often ask “What do you do in the wintertime?”

On South Bass Island, there are a variety of outdoor activities that keep the islanders busy. The most popular is ice fishing. This sport is done in an ice shanty, a small “house” made of a canvas-like material. In each shanty is a small coal or propane stove to keep warm while sitting on the wooden benches. In the floor are holes approx. 1-2 foot long by 12 inches or less wide to drop your fishing line through to catch “the big one”, the most popular being the famous walleye or perch, with the bait being minnows.

Once Lake Erie has frozen several inches thick, ice shanties are dragged out onto the frozen lake by snowmobiles or all terrain vehicles or sometimes pulled out by hand. Holes are chopped in the ice with augers or cut with chainsaws. The ice shanty is placed over the hole and the angler is ready for a great day of fishing!

The cache you will be searching for is near the ramp where the ice fishing shanties are dragged out onto the lake.

This cache is a pill bottle, just a little larger than a film canister. Please bring your own pencil.
