After spending the summer enjoying the many geocaches on the hills of the Phoenix North Valley, I thought it was finally time to place a cache on the hill closest to my house. After getting to the top I found a wonderful view of the Tramonto community as well as a great view of several of my favorite climbs.
To the North West you can see Gavilan Peak tower over New River and the city of Anthem. The Gavilan Peak View cache (N33.54.411 W112 07.504) is just 6.96 miles from this location.
Looking to the South East, the Union Hills provide a natural barrier between the new developments and the Cave Buttes Recreation Area. The Union Hills cache (N33 45.086 W112 05.251) is just 4.06 miles away from this location.
To the South West, Pyramid Peak is the home to Ramses and Khufu caches. Khufu (N33 44.870 W112 10.856) is 5.71 miles from this location.
As a final check, this cache is .371 miles from my North Valley View cache.
For those who prefer a trail, there is a neighborhood trail that starts at the Tramonto community park (coordinates listed below). The trail crosses the street and then follows along the base of the mountains. Although the trail is faint in places it will take you up to the saddle. I’ve included a few waypoints to keep you from straying off the trail (very easy to do in some places). From the saddle you can hike to the final location. The trail is rough in spots, it crosses several washes and becomes steep and slick as it makes its way up to the saddle. Good boots and a walking stick or trekking poles are recommended. There are several steep areas with loose gravel.
This is a desert cache so watch out for the critters and sharp things and bring plenty of water.
