The Great Race
Many years ago now a great race took place. 14 runners were deemed eligible to enter and international excitement grew in anticipation of the coming event.
Pre race betting had the highly fancied runner Edmil as an almost unbackable favourite though big things were also expected from Nutcache and Keeper of Time who were both expected to mount a strong challenge.
As it panned out Edmil as expected made good early running and in spite of a theory that they may have won the race quite early on, in the absence of photographic evidence this could not be proved. In any event Edmil had missed their chance and finished almost 3 lengths behind the surprise winner Alansee. The well credentialled Nutcache rumoured to have German connections had to be satisfied with 3rd and the impressive and stylish Keeper of Time romped home in 4th position with an Italian on board.
Other early challenges came from Muzza and Geodes but they amounted to nothing and the remaining runners fell almost to form excepting for a disappointing second last placing for Daks Emu Mob. But for a quirk of fate Dak rather than Alansee might well have taken the chequered flag. The controversial Chinese connected entry Spruce Mooses finished almost 4 lengths adrift in last place.
At this point with all 14 runners across the line the race was declared over and coincidently almost 14 lengths separated 1st placing from last. In the years that followed considerable interest was still shown in the field and not surprisingly Edmil has received the lions share of attention. Interest in Alansee has waned to the point that he probably receives the least attention of all the original runners.
