Threehalfpenny Hunt Multi-Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a multi-cache which starts at Sparrows Den car park in West Wickham, Kent and will take you on a circular stroll of about three miles across fields and through woods collecting six clues en route to enable you to find the cache. The coordinates given above are for the car park not for the cache.
This is a regular Sunday afternoon walk for us being just a few minutes away from where we live and includes a stretch of the London Loop. This part of the Loop passes through Spring Park Wood and Threehalfpenny Wood (pronounced three ha’penny) hence the name of the multi-cache.
The wood’s name is linked to an incident in the early 19th century. In 1805 the body of a man, Robert Rutter, was discovered in a pond near the woodland and the only means of identification was the sum of 1 1/2d which he was known to have had on him when he disappeared from the village of Sanderstead three years earlier in December 1802. He was the Parish Clerk of Sanderstead and the incident is recorded in one of the village registers."1802 Robert Rutter, Clerk of this Parish 14 years, left his house on Sunday the 19th December 1802 and has not been heard of since." (his body found in a pond near Addington, May 30th 1805.)
The woodland has a mixture of trees including Birch, Oak and Yew, and a variety of birds and small animals. If you are lucky you may see deer and in April/May part of the wood (near clue four) is carpeted with bluebells.
Sparrows Den car park is located at N 51º 22.151, W 000º 00.484. Here you will find a kiosk serving snacks, hot and cold drinks and ice creams adjacent to a pitch and putt course and crazy golf.
The cache is in a small “Lock & Lock” plastic container with room for a few swaps, which when hidden contained the following:
A log book, pencil, three ha’pennies, batteries, CD cleaner, dice and pirate's eye patch.
Please take care when replacing the cache to ensure it remains well hidden.
The final cache can be found at:
N 51º 22.ABC
W 000º 00.DEF
At each coordinate along the route, by answering a question, you will find a number which forms part of the final cache coordinates. The first answer is to be found near to the starting point of the walk. After some of the clues we have included a note(NB) of the direction you should initially set off in; once you have followed this note you should continue the walk by following your GPS in the usual way.
First clue:
What is the telephone number for the Beccehamian R.F.C? The third digit of the number is A.
NB:
From the carpark head south east to the corner of the playing fields then take care crossing the road.
