Geocache Description:

The listing co-ordinates are for the suggested parking area for this cache which replaces my previous and infrequently visited "Hanging Out in Hall Green" series. It is not one for cache and dashers as from parking to final cache and back again is a walk of about 2 3/4 miles through urban paths and parkland. NOTE: MOST OF THE PATH AND THE FINAL CACHE ARE LOCATED BY A SMALL RIVER WHICH CAN FLOOD QUICKLY AFTER HEAVY RAIN AT WHICH TIMES THIS SERIES SHOULD PERHAPS BE AVOIDED.

There has been some clearing of scrub at the hide location making it rather more exposed than I would like so please take care of muggles when retrieving / replacing the cache.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many moons ago, the hobbit Mumbo and an elf companion were entrusted with a mission to take some treasure to a faraway land. Mumbo placed the treasure in his lunchbox to conceal it and they set off. Some way into their journey, after camping the night, they awoke to discover many orcs not far from their camp. After consulting awhile, they agreed the risk of capture and of loss of the treasure was so great that they decided to hide the treasure and make good their escape. They hid the treasure in a hollowed tree and the elf lay a special charm to protect the contents of the lunchbox. Happily, Mumbo and his elf friend got away safely back to the Mill down the river, although they suffered many perils on their way. They made notes of how to find the treasure again when the danger had passed. Now they need your help to get it back again.
To do this, you will need to trek fearlessly through The Shire County Park, so named because of its links to The Hobbit / Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkein, for whom parts of the park and its surrounding area were his childhood playground. Indeed, at Sarehole Mill, said to be the inspiration for Hobbiton, there is an annual Tolkein weekend. You will pass by the Mill on your journey.
Along the way you will have to answer various questions. Be sure to keep all your notes in case you need them later.
STAGE 1
From the car park go to N52 26.585 W001 51.306. This place is adjacent to a busy road. Please take care of any mini-cachers in your party. Originally there were two bridges near here. One was AB yards East and the other CD yards West of this spot. The current bridge was opened EF July GHIJ.
Now work out the Stage 2 co-ordinates thus:
N52 26.[F][(A+B)–E][H] W001 51.[A][E][H-I]
STAGE 2
There are two wood carvings here. One is of a fox’s head. Assuming the other thing represented begins with the letter A, the letter T is the Kth and the letter I is the Lth letter in this word.
Now work out the Stage 3 co-ordinates thus:
N52 26.[F][K][L] W001 51.[K-L][A-C][C+D]
STAGE 3
The path you are on is part of Birmingham’s first M (number of letters in this word). To the North, the path continues for N miles through Project Kingfisher.
Now work out the Stage 4 co-ordinates thus:
N52 25.[N][M/2][N] W001 51.[J][M-J][J]
On your way here you will have to cross two roads. One has a crossing; the other doesn't. Please take care of any mini-cachers in your party.
STAGE 4
A sign here displays access restrictions for vehicles of P tons and over. The restrictions operate between midnight and Q am and between R pm and midnight.
THE FINAL CACHE
You now have all the information you need to retrieve Mumbo's treasure. The co-ordinates for the hollow tree are worked out thus:
N52 25.[Q-J][R-L][(Q+R)–6] W001 51.[Q-D][R-Q][F]
Use your notes to break the elf's protective charm.
Enjoy your walk. If you could do a little bit of CITO along the way, the Rangers would be very grateful.
