Pony Express/Hughes Ranch Traditional Cache
Pony Express/Hughes Ranch

This one sets .2 mile from the major parking area. There is an
access road around the lake which makes it a short walk to the
cache. Might be tough for 18 wheeler.
This cache goes with many other historical marker along the Pony
Express/Oregon Trail. Although the Oregon Trail headed north 40
miles back to the east to follow the North Platte River (Ash
Hollow) this trail followed this route for a while then joined up
again with the OT in the western panhandle. The Hughes Ranch
Station is not as well known as some of the other stations in
Nebraska, but was still an important part of the route. There were
190 stations, 420 horses, and an average of 80 riders on the route.
Average time for the trip was 10 days. But Lincoln's Inaugural
address was delivered to California in just 7 days. The average
truck takes 3-5 days if following the rules/hours of service. So
break neck speed for man and horse for sure. There are two
historical markers here in the little park. Have fun on both. You
are looking for a 'sign' only cache container. Plenty of muggles at
time. Have Fun on this one. Dr. P
