Geocache Description:

The Greenside Mine in Glenridding produced lead from the late 1600s until its closure in 1962. The mine was owned by Glenridding Mining Company established in 1825 and was the first to introduce and use many innovative technologies. They were for example the first to install electric winding gear and generate their own hydro-electricity. They also built a number of houses for their managers and workers. Many of the houses are still occupied in the village either by locals or as holiday homes.

A particular set of 10 houses were built in Glencoyne some time before 1858 at a place called Seldom Seen and when looking for the cache you will appreciate why.

The best approach to the cache is to start at Glenridding, walk alongside Ullswater and then walk up the track before Glencoyne farm. At the cache site look back to get a good view of Seldom Seen and Ullswater. Once the cache has been located, continue up the path that goes round Sheffield Pike and drop down on to the top level of the old mine area. From there go down to the low level mine area and back to Glenridding. For those who like heights Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd can be scaled instead of walking through the old mine areas. The mine area was cleaned up after closure but there is still plenty of evidence of the workings in the form of spoil heaps.

There are at least two books that describe the history of the mine: 'Grey Gold' by Samuel Murphy and 'Greenside and the Mines of the Ullswater Valley' by Ian Tyler. The book 'Lakeland Rambles' by Bryan Lynas has an excellent walk through the old mine workings.
