Geocache Description:

This overlook boasts a fantastic view of the Wind River Mountain Range to the north. The Wind River Range encompasses an area of about 7000 square miles, and runs northwest-southeast for approximately 100 miles. The Continental Divide follows the crest of the Wind River Range and includes Gannett Peak, which is the highest peak in Wyoming. Over 180 glaciers are located in the Wind River Range, including Gannett Glacier, which is the largest single glacier in the U.S. Rocky Mountains.

The Wind River Range is composed primarily of a granitic batholith which formed deep under the surface of the Earth. Over hundreds of millions of years, the rocks which overlay this batholith eroded away. As the land rose, further erosion occurred until all that remained were the granitic rocks. Ice ages beginning a half-million years ago carved the mountains into their present shapes.
