Geocache Description:

You are looking for a small clip lock container hidden at a location to give a perfect view of Beckford’s Tower and the west of Bath countryside.

The Henry Goodridge designed, 120 foot tower was completed in 1827 for local resident William Beckford. Situated at the end of his pleasure gardens, stretching up from his residence in Lansdown Crescent, Beckford used the tower simply as a library and a peaceful retreat. Today the tower is owned by the Bath Preservation Trust, managed by the Beckford Tower Trust and is home to a museum collection of furniture, paintings and objects illustrating Beckford’s life.

Our recommended way to approach the cache is through the Primrose Hill Community Woodland area. There is ample parking in Fonthill Road N51°24.003 W002°22.450. Enter the new woodland area through the metal kissing gate and follow the upper path down to a second kissing gate at N51°24.020 W002°22.844. It is just a short uphill walk from here. Total distance from car to cache is only about 0.25 miles. There are plenty of picnic spots along the way and some fine views across Bath. Be warned it is likely to get quite slippery underfoot after rain and there is one stile to negotiate.

Alternatively you can approach the cache from Lansdown Road at the top of the hill. Park in the lay by at N51°24.341 W002°22.600 and take the footpath down to the cache starting at N51°24.264 W002°22.452. This is a slightly longer and steeper walk with one stile and it can get extremely slippery. However, from here you could combine this with our Beckford’s Tower cache GC18593.
