Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash or a stroll in the country? You will be looking for a small 240ml clip lock container hidden in a nice peaceful location beside By Brook with a splendid view of Shockerwick House.

The Shockerwick Estate was acquired by the Wiltshire family in 1745 from the executors of Anthony Carew esquire. The first Wiltshire owner, Walter, controlled a lucrative gaming establishment in Bath. After his death the estate was inherited by his younger son Walter. The elder son had died quite young but with his brother had set up a successful carrier business. Walter junior went on to become a prominent citizen of Bath holding the positions of common councilman, alderman and the mayor of the City of Bath three times.

Walter was a good friend of the painter Thomas Gainsborough who lived in Bath for 14 years. Using his carrier business, he safely couriered many of Gainsborough’s paintings for free and was gifted some of the works as reward.

Some famous people to have visited the house include, William Pitt the younger and a young Princess Victoria, later to be Queen Victoria, who visited with her mother in 1830.

The house has latterly been owned by the MP Charles Morley, the Duke of Newcastle and the Imperial Group. Today it stands as a residential nursing home which it has been since 1983.

Hope you enjoy your visit to the cache. Whilst here, why not take the public footpath for a stroll along the banks of By Brook to soak up the tranquil atmosphere and gain a better view of the house.
