Geocache Description:

A camoflaged thermos container filled with swag at the tip of a great local park.

Baker's Island in the middle of the Elk River forms part of the heart of historic Webster Springs, WV. Directly west of the cache site, you will see what once was the Webster Springs Hotel, the largest wooden structure in West Virginia, built in the early 1900's to take advantage of the Sulpher Springs nearby. It burned on July 20, 1925. The homes you see are now in what is known as the 'hotel bottom'. Some of their foundations were part of the original hotel. Mark Romano's book, "The Webster Springs Hotel and Historic Springs, WV: The Summer Resort Center", sheds more light on this information if you are interested.

Baker's Island itself is the site of a good recreation area as well as being the site of many festivals, including the Webster Wildwater Weekend, the Bergoo International Cook-Off, and the Annual Webster County Woodchopper's Festival held every Memorial Day weekend. This cache is well hidden and well secured to avoid muggling as well as the occasional springtime flood that takes over the island.
