This pocket handkerchief park was created in the mid 1970s after a milkbar burned down on the site, c1972. Rumour has it that this was after a disagreement between the owners – one a Serb, the other a Croatian.
After a failed development bid by the local mayor at the time (who lived across the road) the council purchased the land and created the park you see today - if you've got good eyes and don't drive past too fast!
Folk lore has it that the local children would recycle the empty bottles from the dump at the back of the shop, claiming the refund several times. The shopkeepers turned a blind eye to this, as a way of helping the poorer local families.
