Edison's Time Trials Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kosh Naranek: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the immediate future, just contact one of your local reviewers and assuming it meets the current guidelines, it can be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

This is a nice little cache in the Big Tujunga Canyon up a very steep trail once used by SCE on the north face of Mount Lukens.

Ever hear of canyoneering? It is a sport that involves hiking to the top of and rappelling down a series of (usually) dry waterfalls. One of the best places for this in the San Gabriel mountains it Suicide Canyon. See http://www.dankat.com/advents/suicid.htm. The starting point for the first rappel down Suicide Canyon is called Lovers Leap. (There is a cache hidden there- see GC10FZM) But the usual route to get there involves a 6 hour hike over the top of Mt Lukens. This cache is hidden along the shortcut, the Maxon route, which saves about 4 hours. The Maxon route follows the SCE trail, continues past this cache, goes through the abandoned marijuana growers camp and on to Lovers Leap using a fairly recently cut trail.

OK. Your mission is to beat the best time from the parking lot to this cache. I made it in 59 minutes without running. I made a wrong turn on the way, you probably will too. You need to make your way to the north side of the water to follow the trail which leads you to turn 1. The first half mile is fairly easy. The last 1/4 mile will knock your socks off. It is pretty much straight up the side of the mountain. It follows the trail but there are not really any switchbacks. Stay on this trail till you actually see the 2nd set of utility poles, very close to the GZ. Bushwacking is very much unadvisable. Those 1/4" to 1/2" vines are poison oak.

So are you up to the challenge? I am 41 years old, 194 lbs. If you like, post you vital statistics along with your time. Do you have energy left? If so, continue on to Lovers Leap.

Please use common sense, snakes live out here, and the poison oak is plentiful so I wouldn't wear shorts. This one is probably too much for the kids and couch potatoes. Bring water and don't forget your Adventure Pass.

Congratulations to Cachemanian Devil on the FTF and an excellent time of 40:12.
