This cache was placed as part of my mission to complete Cache Across Utah for a second time. This time, I am looking for caches in the County Seats. Monticello is the country seat for San Juan County
The following infomation is taken from the Offical Monticello Utah web page (www.monticelloutah.org)
Welcome to Monticello, Utah!
Monticello is packed full of Old American West history. In the 1800's so many fugitives fled to Monticello to escape the hand of the law in the isolated mountains and canyons that it became known as the Outlaw Trail. Monticello offers breathtaking views, serene wildlife, and fabulous fun. Make your escape and find a little bit of refuge in Monticello, Utah.
Monticello: Past, Present, and Future
Cowboys, Native American tribes and outlaws were the first to inhabit the beautiful mountains and canyons of Monticello. Settled in 1887 by Mormon settlers the town was later named Monticello in honor of Thomas Jefferson's estate. There was much turmoil with ongoing disputes between the settler, the cowboys and the Native Americans. Peace was finally enforced between the groups by a contingent of soldiers. Later, miners came in search of riches. A gold and silver rush in the nearby Gold Queen Basin kept excitement high, but results were poor. Monticello received its mining boom in the 1950's when uranium ore was discovered and a uranium processing plant was constructed. Today, golf has replaced uranium processing. Peaceful residents of Monticello have replaced the fighting settlers, cowboys and Native Americans, and a rush of hometown pride has replaced the gold and silver. And the future stands firm because of the history that was made (and is still being made) in the small town of Monticello, Utah.
You will be looking for a hide-a-key, just off the road as you come south into town.. I would also like to post a thanks to Finickykatt for her help in maintaining this cache. While you are down here, be sure to check out her caches in teh area.
