This cache has been moved slightly to address concerns raised by some cachers.
This is the first in what I hope will be a series of caches introducing people to the visible remains of the iron mining industry that was once so important to the Forest of Dean.
Westbury Brook was opened in 1837 by the Dowlais Company, and closed in 1893; during which time almost a million tons of iron ore was produced. The mine was worked on 4 levels: levels 1 and 2 from the 360 feet deep old shaft, whilst levels 3 and 4 were driven from the 670 feet deep Westbury Brook Shaft. Today only the 1st and 2nd levels are accessible; the 3rd and 4th being permanently flooded.
The fenced-off large hole, or "scowle", adjacent to the cache site is the entrance used by cavers today. There is a locked gate at the bottom of the scowle. If you would like to explore Westbury Brook, or any other iron mine in the Forest of Dean then contact the Royal Forest of Dean Caving Club (www.rfdcc.org.uk).
The cache contains some polished pebbles, a few trinkets; and a new TB. It's my first attempt, so any comments are most welcome.
