I dedicated this cache to my father who took me to Peebles Island countless times as a child. Hikers can park in the State Park lot (fees May-Oct.), or park for free at the Canal Visitor Center in Waterford and walk across the bridge (and get great views). Kayakers can launch from the picnic area east of main parking, the boat launch in Waterford or at the boat launch across the Hudson River in Troy. This micro has gone missing three times! The area is highly traveled, and fairly wide open. Watch out for muggles.
KAYAKERS: If you grab this cache by kayak set aside extra time to explore the rest of the island. Paddle around to the south side and you will be rewarded with exceptional views of the Horseshoe Falls and a beach to soak it in. Expand the paddle with a short portage over the falls and explore nearby & rarely visited, Second and Goat islands on the west side of Peebles. Also accessible from the north side. Turn it into a longer trip and head south around the Van Schaick Island (rapids!) and back up the Hudson! As always, scout your course and water levels before launching. If the water looks too high or dangerous it probably is!
Be safe and have fun. Please be sure to screw the cap on tight after logging your visit. Peebles Island State Park Geocache Permit No. 3
