Located in Duluth on Hawk Ridge. FYI: The dirt road that connects
Hawk Ridge and Seven Bridges road is blocked off from November 1st
to April 1st. If you go up to Hawk Ridge off of Glenwood Street you
can still park close to the shorter trail at the scenic overlook if
there's no snow and the road beyond is closed. The road is part of
Skyline Drive that travels along the hillside with many beautiful
views of Lake Superior and Duluth.
Cache is a full sized ammo can, camo painted. There are several
places to park along the road. One spot the walk will be short,
less then .5 mile but on a deer trail(wet in spots after heavy
rain). This trail does not follow the creek but ends up at it.
Another place to park is down some side roads and the trail in is
very nice, only .25 miles in. The next place is about 2.5 miles
down the road near the start of Seven Bridges road. The distance in
from there is about 1.5 miles along a very nicely kept snowmobile
trail used for walking/bike riding in the non-snowy months. This
trail does follow the creek. Either way you go the trails connect.
There's an old beaver dam at the juncture where you can look around
for a walking stick. I had fun walking on the big trees spanning
the creek. Careful in the spring or after a heavy rain when the
water is rushing! In the fall you can stand at the overlooks along
Skyline road and watch the hawks and other raptors migrating, so
bring your binoculars and cameras! Directions to Hawk's Ridge are
as follows. If you're coming in from south of Duluth take I35 north
to the 21st ave East exit. Turn left at the stop sign at the top of
the overpass and head up 21st Ave E. At the top of 21st Ave East
turn right onto Woodland Ave. Take Woodland Ave to Snively Road and
turn right. Follow that to the stop sign and take a right onto
Glenwood St. The road to Hawk Ridge is about a half mile on the
left. Coming from north of Duluth down the shore you can go up 60th
ave east and take a left on Glenwood, up to the top and the road is
on your right. Cache on!!
