Geocache Description:

Level, 0.9 mile hike (one way) along an abandoned rail grade in the Allegheny National Forest. WEAR WATERPROOF BOOTS - you have to cross a small stream at the start, and the trail swampy at times. Hiking The Allegheny National Forest hike #34.

This cache is located near Pigeon Run falls, in eastern Forest County, on Allegheny National Forest land. The parking coordinates are 41 27.553N, 78 58.152W. The roads in this area have no winter maintenance and can be muddy and bumpy - a 4WD is recommended. From the parking area, follow the road that heads north. In a short while you will have to cross a small stream. It is shallow and wide at the road, and can be crossed easily in most seasons. The path then follows an old railroad grade that takes you to the confluence of Spring Creek and Pigeon Run (41 28.091N, 78 57.911W). From here, follow the path to the right. This will take you to the cache area. The falls will be easy to find - take the left-hand path to the stream at 41 28.148N, 78 57.687W. The cache is not hidden anywhere near the falls!

The trail is very wet and marshy at times, and of course you have to cross a stream. It is highly recommended that waterproof boots are worn.

The trail itself is an abandoned rail grade, that, in 1892, W. H. Osterhout of the Eagle Valley Tanning Company (Elk Tanning Company after 1893) built as a logging railroad up Spring Creek. It branched up Big Run, Hill Run and Pigeon Run. It was built to haul their 6200 acres of bark to Hallton and the Clarion River Railroad to Croyland, then to Ridgway. The logs were cut at the Hall, Gardner & Co. sawmill at Hallton.
