Geocache Description:

Black Mountain is a cinder cone volcano, different from other nearby volcanoes like Aden Crater (a shield volcano) and Kilbourne Hole (a maar volcano). Cinder, a lightweight black or red rock, comes from this type of volcano. Very popular in landscaping, you may even have this type of stone in your front yard. In fact, when you go to this cache you'll need to watch out for the large dump trucks as a landscaping company is digging away at the mountain to get the cinder.

The drive to this cache will require you to drive about 2 miles of unpaved roads. A 4WD is not necessary but high clearance would be helpful. Although, you could probably make it in a passenger car if you're careful.

Take Highway 28 south about 3.5 miles past La Mesa and turn right (West) on Afton Rd. Follow this road for 5.7 miles then turn left on a dirt road. Follow this for 2.2 miles and you'll see an area to park. (Don't go past this point or you'll get to the other side of the mountain where the crews are digging.) Then just make your way up the mountain to the cache which is fairly close to the summit. The hike is only about 1/2 mile round trip.

Enjoy the rocks on the way up and the views from the top.
