Geocache Description:

Old Hall/McCurley Cemetery is located in Lewisville on McGee Lane. This is an old cemetery with some graves dating back to 1861. McCurley Cemetery was relocated from McCurley Prairie to Old Hall Cemetery by the USACE. McCurley Prairie is now under Lake Lewisville.

Old Hall Cemetery

No one knows for sure when the first grave appeared in the Old Hall cemetery. Some people say that a family was traveling across country and the father became ill and died. Others say that the Indians killed him. The first recorded grave is Cynthia Lusk Crawford who died September 22, 1861. Many believe the records are not complete, but they show 125 graves entered before 1900.

McCurley Cemetery

The McCurley family came from Illinois and settled in the Lewisville area in 1852. George Collins McCurley set aside land for a cemetery, church and school. George’s brother, Abraham was the first family member buried at the cemetery in 1871. The first marked graves date back to 1877 when neighbors began to use the cemetery. The cemetery had to be relocated to the Old Hall cemetery when Lewisville Lake was built.
