A walk through Creosote Woods with an elevation increase of about 300ft mostly along cleary defined paths, sometimes muddy, with the final cache in a slightly rocky area atop a ridge with great views of the surrounding area including Pembrey Country Park, Burry Holmes and even Worms Head.
The woods that this cache is placed in are not actually called Creosote Woods but when I was writing it up I couldn't remember the proper name and when this name came to me I liked it.
'Tales from Creosote Woods' is in fact the name of a collection of short stories that myself and a couple of friends produced a few years back, which is why it came to mind.
The cache is placed here by the invitation of the owner of the woods, Mr Ilyan Thomas, (thank you) who was very interested in the whole idea of geocaching.
There is parking available down the road from the entrance to the woods at the listed co-ordinates above but as it is a layby near houses please be sure that you do not to block any driveways.
Just a short walk to the entrance of the woods at N51 41.549 W004 17.234 and then take the path on the left, the one with the chain. This is just to stop motor vehicles from entering, so dont worry about stepping over.
At N51 41.598 W004 17.108 there is a very interesting plaque, please note the womans name on the last line of the text. More info on her is readily available online if you want to learn more after you have found the cache.
Use the name to locate the cache at N51 4A.BCD W004 1E.FGH, where:
A= number of letters in womans first name minus 3
B= number of letters in womans first name plus 3
C= number of letters in womans first name and surname minus 7
D= number of letters in womans first name plus 2
E= number of letters in womans surname plus 3
F= number of letters in womans surname minus 3
G= number of letters in womans surname plus 3
H= number of letters in womans surname and first name minus 1
There are some permanent residents in the woods but dont be afraid, they are quite harmless. They are probably more afraid of you than you are of them. Round the corner to the right after the plaque and take the path on the left and you will pass by the camp on your right, there is no need to go through it and disturb anyone.
Half way up the hill which is quite steep in places there is a path on the left at N51 41.684 W004 17.055 which goes to Welly's viewpoint at N51 41.682 W004 17.117 There is no need to go here but there is a nice view if you fancy the short walk.
Near the cache you will walk through a series of mounds and ditches, this is the remains of the Iron Age hill fort that was once here. I assume this was the entrance.
Hope you enjoy the whole surreal-ness of this cache and dont feel too spooked. A weird tour around what I will always think of as Creosote Woods from now on.
I have placed a copy of the leaflet 'Tales from Creosote Woods' in the cache for the first to find....if they really want it?? I only have a few copies left at the moment though, so I will have to get them reprinted if they appear to be in demand?! Hopefully these NON CHILDREN's stories will not spoil your enjoyment of the cache in anyway!! SWAPS in the cache include, Spooks Apprentice - book, metal book mark, coloured pencils, stretchy body parts, key shirts and correction fluid practical joke thingy.
Cheers
Jon Leyshon
