Geocache Description:

Located in New Harvest Park just off of Washington Pike in northeast Knoxville.

Several years ago, the good County Fathers decided that they should build a modern farmers market for the citizens of Knox County. So, with much hullabaloo and expense, they proceeded to build such just west of East Town Mall (now known as Knoxville Center, it is nowhere near the center of Knoxville.).

It was a grand edifice, and it housed a very nice produce store. Outside, there was one of the traditional long sheds where local farmers could come and sell what they grew – the epitome of a farmers market.

Maybe times had changed. Maybe diets had changed. Maybe that is why America is so fat. The farmers market did not attract crowds, and was not profitable. Absent customers, the farmers stayed away. Soon the County Fathers were trying to figure out what to do with a large albino pachyderm.

Various proposals were floated for the use of the building. None came to fruition. Eventually the building was torn down, and a large part of the land was sold to Target, who turned around and resold half of it for what they paid for the entire parcel. The county turned the rest of the property into New Harvest Park, (funded, we believe, by Target) named after the back road into the now extinct farmers market.

Photos of the park can be seen at (visit link) There is a short trail, a playground, a pavilion and ampitheater, and a community building. The structures can be reserved/rented. A splash pad, much like that on Market Square, will open in the spring of 2008. It has three small calibre water canons. The playground underlayment appears to be made of recycled rubber, and is very springy. Park hours are sunrise to sunset. Pictures and an article on the park groundbreaking can be seen at (visit link)

NEW: Knox County Parks and Recreation now operates a farmers' market, in season, at the park on Thursdays, 4-7 p.m.

The cache is a medium-sized lock and lock container, bearing authentic Realtree ® duct tape. It is large enough for a full-sized log and pen, plus some small swag, including some pottery necklaces we made. It is up the hill behind the park, just in the edge of some trees.
