SideTracked-Winchester Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Nubble: I've not lived in the the area for a number of years and rarely come to Winchester. I've managed to maintain the cache until now but unfortunately, now that it has gone missing, I am unable to visit GZ to replace it.

I think it is worth keeping as it has proved very popular. It would be great if someone could resurrect it.

Thanks.

Geocache Description:

An easy cache and dash close to Winchester railway station.

HISTORY

Winchester station was opened on 10th June 1839 by the London & South Western Railway on its mainline from London to Southampton. It opened as a temporary terminus for the line from Southampton until the through line was completed on 30th March 1840. Between 1949 and 1966 the station was named 'Winchester City' to avoid confusion with the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway station named 'Winchester Cheesehill' (later 'Chesil') located to the East of the City.

The current station was renovated in 2004. South West Trains currently operate services from London Waterloo through Winchester to Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth. Winchester is also on the cross country network.
