The Yesteryear series of caches are not meant to be difficult, but
are meant to tell a story about a landmark or event of when I was a
kid growing up in Ottawa.
The items described may or may not be in existence anymore. They
are simply mentioned as my own personal "walk down memory
lane."
Some of you may remember them - some of you may not.
I hope you enjoy them...
YESTERYEAR – Mud Lake
Ahh, yes. Mud Lake.
What an awesome place for nature and wildlife. This is where I
learned the art of catching leopard frogs, bull frogs, and snakes.
Lots of fun.
On the other side of Cassels Street, out in the rapids, was spent
catching gar pike, catfish, and smallmouth bass.
What a blast.
Even in the nip of winter, many muggles walk these trails, and if
you do, be sure to bring a sandwich baggy of small-sized birdseed
for the many black-capped chickadees that will fly right up to you
and land right in your open hand looking for vittles.
Actually, while I was out hiding this cache, a few squirrels came
right up to me and scratched at my pant legs because they knew I
had another container with me that was full of birdseed.
Very cool.
Plenty of free parking, as well as the trailhead, can be found on
Cassels Street at approximately N45 22.397, W75 47.903.
There are signs saying "No Dogs", although I've stepped in evidence
indicating otherwise.
Be advised that this cache is close to open
water. Safety and common sense should prevail, especially with
children and pets.
This area can also be quite swampy, especially after the snow
melts.
Also, at any time of the year, if there is open water on Mud Lake,
this area can be quite stinky due to the stagnant water.
The container you will be looking for is a soup bowl sized Thermos
container that has 2 compartments. The main compartment is for any
small trades, and the upper compartment, which is inside the lid,
holds the log sheet and a pencil. Please rehide it where you found
it and try to conceal it as best as possible.
Have fun, be safe, and remember the birdseed.
I hope you enjoy my “Yesteryear” walk-down-memory-lane caches.
