Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Parachute Rest Area.

The park has a small memorial built as a memorial to the brave men that died while fighting the Battlement Creek Fire during the summer of 1976. The fire started as a lightning strike and ended 880 acres later. On July 16, 1976 an air tanker pilot was killed when his plane hit a ridgetop while turning around in the upper Battlement Creek basin. The following day, four firefighters were burned over when flames roared up a box canyon. Three of the firefighters were killed that afternoon and the fourth was flown to St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Junction with critical burns.

This memorial is dedicated to those brave men that were killed:
Donald Goodman, Pilot
Tony Czak, Crewboss
Stephen Furey, Crewman
Scott Nelson, Crewman

Congratulations to Bugz/Daisy for the FTF :0)

The park has now been reworked to include a service flag memorial that includes the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Law Enforcement and the Fire Service. The old memorial landscaping was removed but the Battlement Creek Fire memorial plaque was kept as part of the new memorial.
