Black Sunday Remembered Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions

This cache is located just off County Road 215.
This cache is located near the main gate to the Exxon’s Colony Oil Shale Project. This project was started by TOSCO (The Oil Shale Company), which later sold out to Exxon. The actual oil shale project was located 13 miles north up Parachute Creek. The Exxon plan was to dig out an underground cavity, fracture the shale and burn it in place (insitu) and then siphon off the liquid shale. Without any advanced notice, Exxon went public with its intentions to shut the project down when it made the announcement on the 10 pm Channel 9 news program, Sunday, May 02, 1982. Hence the name, “Black Sunday”. The following day, over 2,000 workers were out of work. The Towns of Parachute, Rifle, Silt and even Grand Junction felt the economic effects for years.
The cache is a 30 mm Ammo can. It contains a log and lots of stuff. Park near the Double Gates, it's much safer than along the road!
Warning, Warning, Warning..... Cache has been relocated. Old cache has been run over by dozer as part of the tree/brush removal in front of the main gate. The new location is on the west side of County Road 215, near the old tunnels leading from the parking lots into the Colony project.
Congratulations to Bugz/Daisy for the FTF :0)
