This cache is a now a grey medicine bottle. The cache used to situated on the Keep Manaia Beautiful walk which follows the Waiokura River and traverses the Manaia Golf Club but now is closer to the Manaia redoubt, Please follow walkway and do not traipse over fairways, green or other in-bounds parts of the Golf Course.
A military redoubt was built on the site of an old Maori Pa in 1880-1881 in the wake of Titokowharu's Campaign decades early. From the top of the redoubt, a panoramic vista over the Waimate Plains can be obtained, though sadly these days, due to structural integrity issues, it is NOT permitted to climb the tower. Two original gunhouses survive and are well worth a look inside to see the small firing slits for fusilades. For more detail on the history of the area, consult Jamie Belich's excellent book, 'I Shall Not Die'.
When placed originally the cache contained:
1 x Shore Print Jotter Pad
1 x Noughts and Crosses Game
1 x 8 inch Pliers
1 x Sorbent Pocket Tissue Pack
1 x Blank TEAC Audiotape (90mins)
1 x Dove unscented beauty bar
1 x Truman Capote Penguin 60 book entitled 'First and Last'
THat cache was muggled twice so a smaller more accessible cache has been placed.
